Abstract. The article presents the results of a study of the attributive mechanisms for interpreting sports successes and failures in hockey players aged 17–20 with different sports rankings. The study aims to identify the features of causal attribution of sports results and to determine the pedagogical conditions for developing adaptive ways of explaining success and failure. The study involved 83 hockey players (n = 83) aged between 17 and 20 (M = 18.66), who differed in terms of their sports qualification. It has been established that as an athlete’s level of sports qualification increases, the focus shifts towards internal, controllable, and modifiable factors of sports performance. It was also revealed that a successful match outcome is primarily associated with the psychological mindset, team spirit, discipline, and adherence to the coach’s instructions, whereas a defeat is more often attributed to psychological, motivational, and organizational factors. The importance of pedagogical support in the formation of adaptive attribution has been established. The results obtained can be used in the training process, in psychological and pedagogical practice, and in the development of methodological recommendations for coaches.
